So you understand what a “forest” is?

What about a “footprint” ? Ok now we’re 2 for 2. So put it all together and what do you get? Well that’s not exactly what the Forest Footprint Disclosure Survey is all about, but it’s not too far off.

The Forest Footprint Disclosure project,  works with nearly 300 global companies, to disclose their dependence on certain commodities in their supply chains  –  soy, palm oil, timber, cattle products and biofuels—which are known to be linked to deforestation pressures.

Right, so what this means is: these companies who participate have to think about how the products they make, and the services they provide – have an impact on forests. It’s definitely simplifying what they do – but what’s important to understand is that these companies are making an effort to see just how their work impacts forests – are the products supplying directly or indirectly harming forests?

Which 12 U.S Companies Participated? :

American Electric Power; Avon Products, Inc.; Best Buy Co., Inc.; BlackGold Biofuels; International Paper; Kimberly-Clark Corporation; Lowe’s Companies, Inc.; Nike Inc.; PepsiCo.; Piedmont Biofuels; The Timberland Company; Weyerhaeuser

Kimberly-Clark and Nike were both Sector Winners – showing the positive, forest-friendly policies they have in effect, and their potential for doing more positive work in the future!

No company is perfect yet – but all of these companies definitely deserve a pat on the back / thumbs up for working to make efforts to be more aware of their impact on forests, and hopefully moving forward to improve!
